Glenrock Studio - Ian Pethers

Ian Pethers was born in London in 1956, and grew up in the Thames Valley. He took to painting at an early age, and enjoyed illustrating specimens of butterflies and moths found in the local countryside. Holidays were taken in Cornwall, and his first oil paintings depict scenes around Polperro.  He has worked as a relief lock-keeper on the River Thames, during which time he explored the river in his small boat and produced over 100 ink and watercolour paintings of the Thames. In 1989 he was elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists for his studies of gardens and flowers. He moved to Cornwall in 1990 to a cottage overlooking the Tamar Valley, where he now lives with his wife Marylou. He likes to find beauty in unexpected places, especially if it involves light reflected in water.  As well as painting two murals in Callington he has mastered the art of miniature painting, and in 2001 he was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers.  In April 2003 Ian Pethers received the prestigious Llewellyn-Alexander Master's Award, for one of the two best sets of miniatures in their exhibition. In 2004 Ian was elected a Full Member of the Hilliard Society of miniature painting. Ian was elected a Full Member of the Royal Society of Miniature Artists in 2006, and was invited to take part in an exhibition of miniature paintings at the Royal Academy.
